Preventing drug use in the workplace is a concern for employers

Drug use in the workplace is a concern for any business or employer.  The effect it can have on standards of work, on office morale and even on stress levels for all involved, are serious considerations.  However, detecting drug use can be difficult, and often the problem can be missed, causing further distress for all involved.  In those cases where individuals are fortunate to have a caring employer who is understanding about the situation, and encourages an employee to enter into a drug center, the situation can be handled in a controlled way, and there is potential for the situation to end well for all involved.

However, drug use is obviously not to be encouraged, especially in a place of work, so some researchers have investigated what tactics are best ones to employ, yo discourage drug use at work.  It appears that it is the perception about their supervisors or bosses' ability to detect drug use that may be most influential in reducing drug use at work.  When employees are under the impression that their boss will be able to detect any drug use, and have the ability to take action when this is the case, they are far less likely to use substances while at work (Medical News Today, 2012).  This effect can also have a positive impact on drug use outside of work.

Based on this information, the researchers suggest that in order to tackle and prevent drug use at work, supervisors and managers should undergo training to enable them to detect employee drug use.  All employees should also be made explicitly aware of their companies drug policy, and the consequences of drug use at work.

It may also be beneficial for companies to have training on the typical stress factors that may increase drug use, and should make efforts to ensure all employees have adequate support and freedom if suffering difficulties at work or at home.

Having these precautions in place may be able to prevent drug use at work that would negatively affect all involved.
