Anticipation of detox steps can be daunting

Those who are suffering with an addiction can find it extremely difficult to take the steps necessary to halt their dependence on drugs or alcohol.  As is often mentioned, the first step is admitting you have a problem, and while this can be a challenge on it's own, the steps that follow are no easier to tackle.

Often an individual, who is able to admit their problem, then faces the issue of what they should do next.  If they are still trapped by their addiction and are still using a substance, the next step on the road to recovery may be a medical detox, where they remove all traces of a substance from their body.

Following a successful detox, which can be extremely demanding physically and mentally for an individual, it is then important for them to engage in an appropriate rehabilitation program and complete it.  After completing a rehab program, it is often recommended that individuals seek out aftercare support in order to maintain their abstinence.

However, just anticipating these steps individually may seem daunting, let alone how they may appear if considered together.  It may, therefore, be partly due to this seemingly insurmountable set of tasks that rates of engagement in treatment programs are so low.  A report from the National Drug Treatment Monitoring System (NDTMS) in England suggested that of the estimated 2 million people who suffer from a form of addiction, only 204,473 people were reported in 2011 to be in contact with treatment services.  While this is an improvement from previous years, such as 3003/4, where only 140,900 individuals suffering from addiction sought out treatment, it shows that more still needs to be done in order to increase levels of engagement with treatment services.  It is only once people choose to access treatment that they can begin their journey to recovery. However, despite the fact that they need to take that first step, it is important to have services ready to receive people, and which people are able to access easily and without judgment.
